Unlocking Clarity: How Journaling Can Boost Your Mental Health

Posted on

Journaling is one of the most powerful tools we have to untangle our thoughts and improve our mental health.

If you’ve ever felt stuck in a loop of overthinking—your thoughts bouncing around until your brain feels scrambled—you’re not alone. Sometimes we turn to Netflix or scrolling just to escape the noise. But what if we could face that chaos with curiosity instead of avoidance?

WirthWhile Wednesday: A Journaling Night to Remember

In WirthWhile Wednesday Episode 7, hosted at Kits Beach Coffee, the wonderful Sasha Curry led an intimate group through a guided journaling session. With cocktails in hand, cozy vibes, and plenty of reflection, Sasha created a space to connect with ourselves on paper. Whether you're new to journaling or a seasoned pro, there was something beautiful about being led through it in a room full of care and creativity.

Meet Sasha Curry: Writer, Facilitator, Wellness Advocate

We caught up with Sasha a few weeks after the event to talk more about her journey with journaling and why this practice matters so much to her.

When did journaling become part of your life?

Aside from keeping a diary as a kid, I began incorporating journaling into purpose discovery work I did with startups nearly a decade ago. The biggest shift happened after a session where I wrote about my dream life five years into the future. Years later, I realized I was living that exact vision—a home by the ocean, the kind of partner I had imagined, and a lifestyle I’d only dreamt of back then. Since then, journaling has been a quiet compass guiding my decisions.

Why is journaling important to you?

It’s how I reset, slow down, and understand the patterns looping in my mind. Writing has always been my ‘thing,’ so having a wellness practice rooted in words just fits. It’s helped me make sense of the noise and dream out loud on the page.

Prompted vs. free-flow journaling—what’s the difference?

It depends on your purpose. Prompts are great for quick check-ins or shifting repetitive thought patterns. Free-flowing or ‘brain dump’ journaling helps unload emotionally charged narratives—those stories we replay over and over. Both have a place in my practice.

How did the WirthWhile night feel for you?

Really special. The Wirth community always brings together kind, introspective people. I loved seeing both friends and new faces show up without expectations—just willing to write and be present. That kind of openness is inspiring.

Why host events like this?

Because it’s a fun, low-pressure way to introduce journaling to people who might never try it on their own. Doing it in community adds a layer of shared empathy—it’s like your favorite workout class, but for your emotional wellness.

Any prompts you can share?

Can’t give away all my secrets but one I often use to begin sessions is: "I feel ___". It’s simple and grounding. Just scan your body and mind, and write down what comes up for three minutes.

Should everyone journal?

I think so. Even two minutes a day can help you tune in and clear mental space. Bonus: it’s scientifically shown to increase dopamine production in your hippocampus. So yeah—journaling sparks joy!

Any advice for adult beginners?

  • Create a ritual—pair it with coffee, post-workout, or before bed.
  • Collect prompts that resonate with you.
  • Start small. A few minutes, a few times a week makes a big difference.
